NEWS RELEASE
COUNTY OF SIMCOE
*************************
The County of Simcoe recognizes June 8 to 14 as International Archives Week and the essential role that archives services play in the preservation and use of our community and legislative history.

During the COVID-19 medical pandemic the Simcoe County Archives has made available on its website a variety of information and resources for teachers, parents, students and historical researchers working from home.

The Archives has also recently acquired digital preservation software that enables the long-term preservation of modern digital records, helping to keep the door to the County’s collective history open as we all practice physical distancing and isolation.

Collections held at the Simcoe County Archives that may be of interest to residents of all ages during COVID-19 (and regular times), include:

  • Legislative records (the Simcoe County Archives stores records for the County, its 16 member municipalities and the City of Barrie)
  • Genealogical resources
  • Diaries and scrapbooks
  • Business record
  • Photographs and videos
  • Maps
  • Architectural and technical drawings
  • Regional and community histories
  • Oral histories
  • Local newspapers dating from 1847 to the present
  • And more…

As the Simcoe County Archives remains closed to the public, interested parties can learn more about its wealth of resources by visiting https://www.simcoe.ca/dpt/arc.

The award-winning Simcoe County Archives was established in 1966 and was Ontario’s first upper-tier municipal archives. During its 54-year history, the Simcoe County Archives has preserved the past and served tens of thousands of patrons with virtually every research interest imaginable.
