I was raised to believe that people in suits automatically commanded respect. As I got older, I learned that nothing could be further from the truth.

Along with decent people, many of the biggest criminals and cruel, heartless, overly judgmental people wear them as well.

Respect must be earned, not automatically granted. Case in point with respect to the latest provincial caucus controversy. What people wear in the legislature or anywhere else should not matter. What they represent and accomplish should. And time wasted on issues like this means important work does not get done expediently.

Earn respect; don’t automatically expect it.
