GREEN HAVEN SHELTER FOR WOMEN

Green Haven Shelter for Women is thrilled to be hosting Take Back The Night on May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Orillia Public Library.

Take Back the Night is a protest, rally, and march that demands an end to sexual assault and gender-based violence. First brought to the streets in Vancouver, Canada in 1978, Take Back the Night continues annually across the country and internationally to protest violence against women in all forms.

In the month of March alone, there were nine confirmed cases of femicide in Ontario. Please join us on May 16 for our Take Back the Night awareness march demanding an end to gender-based violence.

Raise your voice and speak for those who are no longer able to speak for themselves. Estella Wheeler (64), Julia MacIsaac (42), Celine-Marie Owens (75), Jane Doe (38), Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani Dilanthika Ekanyake (35), Ashwini Wickramasinghe (4), Rinyana Wickramasinghe (2), and Kelly Wickramasinghe (2m), we march for you.

Executive director for Green Haven Shelter for Women, Linda Reid, says “this is an eventful time in Ontario. The Government of Ontario carried Bill 173: Intimate Partner Violence Epidemic Act through a second reading and deferred it to the Justice Policy Committee.

"This means that the provincial government has recognized what we have long known and been calling for them to name: intimate partner violence (IPV) is an epidemic," said Reid.

"While the government has indicated their intent to have the Justice Committee tour the province and research the impacts of intimate partner violence, our hope is that they will simultaneously begin implementing existing recommendations to address this violence, including passing Bill 173 through third reading and royal assent.

"Let’s raise our voices and march together on May 16 for the victims of femicide and the courageous survivors or domestic abuse. Let’s Take Back The Night and walk to end violence against women.”
