The Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU) is inviting students and the community at large to attend Rock the Vote, an Orillia municipal elections forum, on Monday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.

The in-person forum will be hosted in lecture hall OA1022 and will also be livestreamed on the students’ union’s Facebook page for those wishing to watch from home.

Candidates running in contested elections for mayor, Ward 3 councillors, and school board trustees have all been invited.

The forum is being co-hosted by Dr. Todd Stubbs, an instructor in political science, and Aaron Hiltz, a pre-law and political science student. Topics will range from affordable housing and transit to community, justice, and education. Following the forum, there will be a brief opportunity to meet with candidates. Light refreshments will be served.

“Students, staff, and faculty are all affected by the decisions made by municipal office holders; regardless of whether or not they can vote here, we need to engage our campus community and get out the vote,” said Brandon Rhéal Amyot, LUSU’s vice-president, Orillia. “My hope is that people leave this forum with the information they need and, crucially, the encouragement they need to go vote.”

Students residing in Orillia to attend post-secondary are reminded that they are eligible to vote in Orillia and in the municipality they call “home.” Advance voting begins Oct. 8 in Orillia, and election day is Oct. 24.
