WATCH: Province to establish task force to end criminal activity, violence in towing industry

The goal of the task force will be to help develop a regulatory model that will increase safety and enforcement, clarify protections for consumers, improve industry standards, and consider tougher penalties for violators

Premier Doug Ford announced today that the provincial government is establishing a task force improve oversight of the towing industry.

The goal of the task force will be to help develop a regulatory model that will increase safety and enforcement, clarify protections for consumers, improve industry standards, and consider tougher penalties for violators.

This comes in response to recent concerns raised about incidents of criminal activity and violence in the towing industry.

Membership of the task force will include representatives from the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of the Solicitor General, the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, the Ministry of Finance and the Ontario Provincial Police. Once the task force has developed proposals for discussion and comment, it will be consulting with industry, municipalities, and public safety experts.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is scheduled to make a COVID-19 announcement at 1:00 p.m. today.

Today's update comes after the provincial government extended Ontario's emergency orders until July 10. 

While most of the province has entered Stage 2 of the province’s economic reopening plan, there are still two areas in Windsor-Essex that remain in Stage 1.

The premier will be joined by Minister of Health Christine Elliott, Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney and Solicitor General Sylvia Jones to make the announcement.
