WATCH: Canada-U.S. border closure extended until July 21

Trudeau announced the extension today

Update:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that the Canada-U.S. border closure has been extended by 30 days until July 21.

The border has been closed to all but essential traffic and goods since mid-March, in an attempt to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

The prime minister says the two countries have agreed to maintain current conditions "in order to keep both countries safe."

Original story:

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is slated to provide a COVID-19 update at 11:00 a.m. in Ottawa today.

Yesterday, Trudeau said that details would be released later this week on an extension of the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) program. It is expected that those details will be released today.

Village Media will carry the livestream, so stay tuned.

* Editor's note: An earlier version of this story stated the extension was until July 31. It has been corrected to reflect the accurate date, July 21
