The number of positive, confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario decreased by 18% over the past 24 hours.
Today, Public Health Ontario is reporting 658 new cases of COVID-19 in its daily update - almost 150 fewer than Friday's count. Thursday, there were 712 new cases across the province, while 783 were reported on Wednesday.
The province is also reporting that five people died Saturday from COVID-19. On Friday, 10 people died.
On Saturday, 40,900 COVID tests were completed. Right now, there are 23,609 tests currently under investigation, awaiting results. Since the pandemic began, more than 4,658,000 tests have been conducted.
Today's report includes 197 new cases from Toronto, 155 from Peel Region, 66 from Ottawa, and 94 from York Region.
Among today's new cases, 241 are among people aged 20-39, while 229 are people aged 40-59 and 90 of the new cases are in those 19 and under.
In the past 24 hours, 685 cases have been successfully resolved. To date, 55,371 cases - or 86% - of the 64,371 total cases confirmed since the pandemic began have been resolved.
Right now, 247 people are reported hospitalized in Ontario due to COVID-19. There are 71 COVID patients in intensive care units and 43 people are requiring the use of a ventilator to breathe. It's important to note many hospitals (approximately 40) did not submit data to the Daily Bed Census for Oct. 16; that is common for weekends. Public Health Ontario anticipates the number of hospitalized patients may increase when reporting compliance increases.
To date the province has confirmed 63,713 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario and has reported 54,686 (85 per cent) of those individuals have recovered while 3,041 (4.8 per cent) have died.
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 1,108 cases of COVID-19, with 1,037 of those in Simcoe County. There are now 932 cases listed as recovered. There are 137 active cases in the region, and five people are currently hospitalized The health unit has recorded 43 deaths.
The incidence rate for Simcoe-Muskoka region is 186 cases per 100,000 people.
