There are now 50 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Simcoe Muskoka region.

There has also been another death attributed to COVID-19 in the region. A man in his 80s died at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial on the weekend. Last week, a woman in her 70s died at the Orillia hospital.

Neither of these two victims had travelled or were in contact with anyone who travelled, suggesting there is community transmission of the deadly virus. Earlier in March, two elderly men died in Barrie.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) has confirmed cases in Collingwood (1), Barrie (8), Orillia (7), Springwater (2), Clearview (2), New Tecumseth (5), Adjala-Tosorontio (1), Bradford West Gwillimbury (6), Essa (1), Midland (2), Oro-Medonte (2) Ramara (1), Gravenhurst (3) and Huntsville (3).

The remaining six cases have not yet been posted to the website, and the health unit could not provide information yet.

Dr. Charles Gardner, medical officer of health for SMDHU, stressed it is important for everyone to adhere to physical distancing rules. He said there is evidence of community spread, and it is imperative everyone do what they can to flatten the curve and prevent a large surge in cases overloading health care systems.

There have been 26 cases in patients aged 35-64, 12 cases in patients aged 65 or older. There have been six cases in patients aged 18-34.

The health unit is reporting six patients have recovered, eight are hospitalized, 25 are in self-isolation, and four have died.

There are 28 cases attributed to travel, six to close contact, nine community-acquired, and one under investigation.
