A spike in overdoses during the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted two agencies in the region to team up to support those in need.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) in Orillia and the Gilbert Centre, based in Barrie, are starting an outreach program that will see professionals provide harm-reduction supplies to those dealing with addiction.

“With the pandemic, treatment centres have closed down. Our community of people who struggle with addiction are left with virtually no support,” said Sarah Melbye, CMHA Orillia’s Rapid Access Addiction Medicine Clinic counsellor.

“Not only was this population isolated and stigmatized before the pandemic. Now, on top of that, everything has shut down," she said.

Melbye has seen, first hand, the effect that is having on her clients.

“I’ve seen an increase in overdose and deaths from overdose,” she said. “People are not well right now.”

In an effort to reverse that trend, she and a representative from the Gilbert Centre will be reaching out to people in the community and at shelters to offer supplies, naloxone kits and, when needed, clean needles. Naloxone temporarily reverses the effects of an overdose. The counsellors will also educate people on how to use the supplies.

They are encouraging people to call them to ask for help.

“They can basically place an order with us for supplies,” Melbye said, adding arrangements will be made to deliver them. “Come to us. We will help you.”

Those who know people who are suffering should spread the word to them about the outreach program, she said, while others can do their part simply by being understanding.

“One of the most important things the community can do right now is have some empathy and be kind,” she said.

The outreach will happen every other week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., starting this coming Tuesday.

Melbye can be reached at 705-309-4133. That is her work cellphone and she will respond during business hours.

The Gilbert Centre can be reached at 705-722-6778.

Those in need of assistance from the CMHA can call 1-888-893-8333 to be connected with a counsellor.
