Simcoe resident among 11 COVID-19 cases linked to soccer players at Vaughan sportsplex

Cases include York, Simcoe, Toronto, Peel residents; public health says risk of exposure is high for individuals present Nov. 11 and 15

York Region Public Health issued a public notice Nov. 28 after 11 cases of COVID-19 were confirmed for individuals who played soccer at TRIO Sportsplex and Event Centre in Vaughan.

York Region Public Health is issuing a public notice of a cluster of COVID-19 cases related to a group of individuals playing soccer at TRIO Sportsplex and Event Centre, located at 601 Cityview Blvd. in Vaughan. Case investigation found a group of 20 to 25 individuals played soccer at this facility on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020 and Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020. While the group wore masks during play, masks were not worn in the change rooms. 

York Region Public Health was notified of the first confirmed case on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020. Since being notified, York Region Public Health has identified a total of 11 confirmed cases of COVID-19 associated with this group, including:  

  • Eight cases from Toronto  
  • One case from York Region  
  • One case from Simcoe-Muskoka Region 
  • One case from Peel Region

York Region Public Health has identified all individuals present as high-risk and has advised on 14-day self-isolation requirements.

Confirmed and probable cases: 11 confirmed cases (as of 9 a.m. Nov. 28, 2020)
Deaths: 0
Risk to residents who attended: high risk of exposure

Any individuals who attended either of the events noted above are advised to:  

  • Self-isolate for 14 days until Monday, Nov. 30, 2020  
  • If any symptoms of COVID-19 develop, seek assessment and testing at a COVID-19 assessment centre and continue to isolate while waiting for your results 
  • Call the local public health unit you reside in and advise you attended an indoor soccer game at this location during the dates and times noted above

York Region Public Health is conducting case and contact management activities associated with the confirmed COVID-19 cases.
