Six Orillia residents among 43 new COVID cases reported today

There are also three new cases in Oro-Medonte Township; There are three more confirmed cases of the UK variant in our region, says health unit

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 43 new COVID-19 cases and no deaths in its update today. 

There are currently 526 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

According to the health unit, 174 local cases have tested positive for the B.1.1.7 variant that originated in the UK, which is up by three cases since last report. An additional 270 cases have screened positive (awaiting confirmatory testing), which is up by 57 cases since yesterday.

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 6,334 cases of COVID-19 with 5,576 of those cases recovered and 187 cases ending in death. 

There are 21 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19. There have been no new hospitalizations since yesterday.

The health unit has administered 36,120 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka to health care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes, as well as to all eligible long-term care home residents. The health unit reports more than 15,000 people in the region have received both required doses of the vaccine, including more than 90 per cent of the region's long-term care residents.

There are six ongoing outbreaks at health care facilities in Simcoe County including Grove Park long-term care home in Barrie, Bradford Valley care Community, Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care (Penetanguishene), Bayshore Transitional Care Unit (Barrie), and Sara Vista long-term care home in Springwater, and Leacock Care Centre in Orillia

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified): 

  • Orillia (6): Two men between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, and a woman and two men between 45 and 64 years old. Case transmission for all six cases is still under investigation. 
  • Oro-Medonte (3): A youth under 18 and two women between 35 and 44 years old. All three cases are attributed to community transmission
  • Clearview (1): A man between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Barrie (7): Two women and a man between 18 and 34 years old, two women and a man between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact and one is outbreak-related.  
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (7): Four youth under 18, a woman between 35 and 44 years old, a woman between 45 and 64 years old and a man between 65 and 79 years old whose case is linked to close contact. 
  • Innisfil (8): A youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 35 and 44 years old, two women and a man between 45 and 64 years old, and a man between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to close contact. 
  • Tiny (6): Two youth under 18, a man between 18 and 34 years old, a woman between 35 and 44 years old, and a man and a woman between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact.  
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (1): A woman between 18 and 34 years old whose case is outbreak-related.
  • New Tecumseth (3): A man between 18 and 34 years old, a man between 35 and 44 years old, and a man between 45 and 64 years old. 
  • There is one new cases in Muskoka - a Gravenhurst man between 45 and 64 years old whose case is linked to travel.
