OrilliaMatters received the following letter from Carol Deimling, who wants Orillians to know about opportunities to see opera performances at local cinemas.

Never seen an opera? On Saturday, Jan. 12, the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York City will present a live HD performance of Francesco Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur in cinemas across Canada and the world. It is part of a series of 11 live performances filmed for audiences In 2018-19.

Here, at Galaxy Cinemas in Orillia, watch the performance of this opera and enjoy a look at the actors/singers, the costumes, the scenery and enjoy the music of a famous composer.

Adriana Lecouvreur is the story of a French actress who dazzled audiences in the 18th century with her on- and off-stage passion. Adriana is played by Anna Netrebko and her lover is played by tenor Piotr Beczala. The production will be sung in Italian with English subtitles.

One of the outstanding things about these performances is being up close to the action and hearing the opera singers as if they were in your own living room.

The performance usually starts at 12:55 p.m. and includes previews of the other operas being filmed live in the months ahead. All of the operas have encore performances at the Barrie Cineplex on Commerce Park Drive if you happen to miss one.

Already this season, the MET has presented the following operas: Aida, Samson and Dalila, La Fanciulla, Del West, Marnie, The Magic Flute, and La Traviata. These wonderful operas will be shown live in HD on film in Orillia in the coming months: Adriana Lecouvreur on Jan. 12, Carmen on Feb. 2, La Fille du Regiment on March 2, Die Walkure on March 30 and Dialogue des Carmelites on May 11.

Don’t miss any of these exciting performances. Check out metopera.org.
