The City of Orillia announced significant layoffs across several departments according to an OrilliaMatters story March 31. This raises the question if these layoffs are social responsible?

All governments are talking about preventing an economic collapse as a result of all the closures. The federal and provincial governments are pumping money into the economy to avoid a depression. The city’s action goes contrary to the aim of this “rescue work”, as these layoffs will reduce cash in the economy while saving some cash in the city’s coffers.

The city, by laying these workers off, will save some money but the taxpayer will only partially benefit by this saving as most of the employees will qualify for employment insurance or other taxpayer funded payments.

So much of the “city’s saving” is just a shift from the left pocket to the right pocket for the tax payers. This leaves, in the writer's mind, the question are the city layoffs a benefit to the society.
