LETTER: Development is threatening our 'uniqueness'

Letter writer says there's a disconnect between wanting to be unique and green-lighting widespread development

OrilliaMatters received the following letter from Konrad Brenner about our story this week about potential tourism opportunities being considered.

A recent OrilliaMatters story indicated that the Orillia Community Development Corporation held on June 7 a meeting for the purpose of researching ideas on how to attract tourism.

There were apparently a number of ideas that could be implemented in the near future to attract more business.

One statement in the article caught this writer’s attention: “Dean Beers, president of the Orillia District Chamber of Commerce, said it is important to ‘focus on what makes us unique’ when trying to bring business to the area. That includes two lakes that offer different opportunities”.

It is interesting to note that Mr. Beers talks of “makes us unique” while the city council and for that matter the adjacent township councils work hard to attract development and increase density.

Such development will have the result that we just become an urban area on the fringes of the Greater Toronto Area with little “uniqueness.”
