OrilliaMatters published a letter Friday which generated many variable comments on local homeless people. This interest appeared to be generated by the current housing arrangement brought about by COVID-19.

There is very limited solid, numerical research on the causes of homelessness. However, based on what is floating around, one can state:

  • A very small percentage of the homeless people is out on the streets by choice;
  • Few of these homeless people are just lazy; and
  • Handing them cash does frequently not solve the homeless status.

These people are not “homeless,” they are “houseless”, a condition that can be solved by the municipal/county government. Once one corrects the “houseless difficulty”, other problem areas can be tackled.
