OrilliaMatters welcomes letters to the editor ([email protected]). The following letter from Konrad Brenner is in response to a letter published Dec. 17, titled, 'Stigma of distrust of politicians well-earned.'

A recent issue carried a letter written by Ray Kopylciv which is not too complimentary on politicians. My experience with provincial and federal government politicians is limited.

However, I have in the last half-century drank lots of coffee and, wine, at times, with local politicians as well as kept chairs warm through more than 500 council or similar meetings. (Never sought political office myself) Based on this experience, I disagree with Mr. Kopylciv’s assessment.

I have encountered council members that were socialists and others that supported the capital system, some were flexible and others stuck to their beliefs. However, they all attempted to do achieve what they thought was the best for the community.

Many naturally reached their decision from the viewpoint of their social philosophy which may or may not have satisfied other people. Aside from upholding their principles, all council members, that hope to get re-elected, estimate the votes to be lost of gained in every decision they make, which is democracy.

I suggest local government is in reasonably good shape and the mistrust of local politicians, that is frequently expressed, is largely unwarranted.
