OrilliaMatters received the following letter from Wayne Cox who is thankful for help from a local metal detector enthusiast who found his lost wedding ring - for free.

I am writing to extend a very public commendation and thank you to one of our local citizens for efforts that recently went far beyond any expected call of duty.

I refer to one Mr. Jeremiah Bowes, president of the Orillia Metal Detecting Club. At the very least, I would like to nominate him for a Community Service Award, if such exists.

Here is my story:

Near the end of April, on one of those "not winter but not really spring" days we have had so often lately, I decided to clean up some remaining leaves on my front lawn.

In fact, I gathered up about eight bags of them and took them out to the curb.

At that point I noticed that my wedding ring, which I have had for almost 50 years, was missing. I could only think that in the cold and damp, it had slipped off my finger and fallen into one of the leaf bags.

Reclaiming them, dumping them out and sifting through them one by one was a daunting task. But my wife had read something in OrilliaMatters about a local person who was heavily involved in the Orillia Metal Detectors' Club.

Through a long process, my brother-in-law from Montreal contacted Jeremiah, who in turn contacted me. To my great surprise and delight, he volunteered to come over to my house to apply his technical expertise with sophisticated metal-detecting equipment.

Well, you can imagine the rest. Within about half an hour, he walked over to me and said "Is this your ring?" Needless to say, I was ecstatic. (Click here to watch a video of the memorable moment)

The really nice part is that he was as happy as I was, and said that it was entirely his pleasure to be of help. Now THAT'S community service!

Many thanks, Jeremiah, to you and your organization. And to OrilliaMatters, for first writing about them.
