OrilliaMatters received the following letter from Konrad Brenner in response to our recent story about those who live in local common-elements condominiums calling for fairness in taxation .

The City of Orillia has decided to establish in 2019 a working group to review condominium regulations as the result of two presentations made by Mr. Scott Maclagan.

There is no reason to object to the review of condominiums but the two media reports leave an incorrect impression on the subject.

The concept of the condominium legislation was developed by R.C. B. Risk in the mid 1960s and the first Condominium Act was passed in 1967 and came into force on Sept. 1, 1967. So, the legislation has been here for half a century and has achieved its goal. The thrust of the legislation has not changed.

The main reason for the condominium concept was the people’s desire to own apartments and townhouses, which was very difficult and cumbersome under the co-operative form of ownership. The co-operative form was essentially the only legislation available at that time.

Developers were not attempting to reduce roads, etc during the 1960s at the time the condominium concept was implemented. It was about making apartment ownership feasible.
