LETTER: Seniors deserve more respect from the government

The pension increase from last year, and the expected increase for 2023 will be 'nothing more than a slap in the face,' laments reader

I live in Nova Scotia, was a former resident (of Orillia) and was born in Ontario.

It truly seems that as soon as we reach the age of 65, our worth to the government diminishes with each passing year. Our healthcare is almost non existent.

By age 75, our group (the baby boomers) lose most of our benefits. Our pension increases to cover our monthly expenses is ridiculous. There is no way the increase from last year, and the probable increase for 2023, will be anything more than a slap in the face.

Where is the respect that we are due after 60 years of paying taxes, supporters those that are voted into power, then completely forget about our contribution. We are the ones who loaned our tax dollars to the governments over the years. They have used our money for all kinds of projects, like the Trudeau years — both the rule of the father and the son. The nepotism displayed and our dollars support this? Not to mention the government nannies that seem to be in vogue during these years.

We don't need doctors, lawyers or millionaires to run our country as representatives of our politicians. We need working men and women, truck drivers, cabbies, salesmen and the like.

We need those that have to live within their means, not some rich person that comes from wealthy backgrounds, but those who know where the millions of dollars are given to whatever is the pet program of the current representatives. Why are we sending millions to some overseas entity with little or no oversight that is responsible and required to justify the distribution of these funds?

This rant is ... only the surface of my discontent.
