LETTER: Sunshine City needs its own flower. How about the Otrillia?

Photo of trillium sparks light-hearted campaign to 'show our mettle for the petal,' says local shutterbug

OrilliaMatters received the following letter from Philip Jackman - a bit of a departure from dispiriting and discouraging news of the world.

When I recently posted some photos of trilliums to my Facebook page, I mentioned, in passing, that it had always seemed to me that the plural of “trillium” should be “trillia,” not “trilliums.”

Such was the positive response from my countless Facebook friends to this idea that I’m starting a campaign to have the plural changed. “Trillia” has a nice ring to it and sounds a lot classier.

Furthermore, one friend suggested that local examples of these wondrous flowers could be renamed “Orillia trillia,” or simply “Otrillia.”

Splendid idea, I’d say.

So, fellow Orillians, let’s show our mettle for the petal. The time for the Orillia trillia campaign has come! If nothing else, it will provide a brief distraction from Brexit, Donald Trump and Doug Ford.

I don’t know if you need a break from that lot, but I certainly do.

Philip Jackman
Orillia
