12 local residents among 99 new COVID cases in region today

There are three new confirmed cases in Orillia, two in Ramara Township and seven in Severn Township, say local health unit officials

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 99 new COVID-19 cases and one death in today's update (April 28). 

The death reported today was a woman from Simcoe County who was over 79 years old. She died on April 26.

There are 1,334 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.

The health unit has reported 3,163 variant cases confirmed to date, with 959 of those cases still active.

At least one case of the B.1.617 variant strain that is spreading across India has been detected in Simcoe Muskoka as of yesterday. 

Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 10,241 cases of COVID-19 with 8,236 of those cases recovered and 223 cases ending in death. 

There are 48 people from Simcoe County and two people from Muskoka hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes five new hospitalizations since yesterday.

To date, 179,839 people in Simcoe-Muskoka region have received their first dose of a vaccination against COVID-19, which is about 28.8 per cent of the region's population. 

The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise noted):

  • Orillia (3): One person between 18 and 34 years old, and two people between 35 and 44 years old.
  • Ramara (2): One person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Severn (7): One youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. Two cases are linked to close contact and one was community-acquired.
  • Collingwood (2): One person between 45 and 64 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Wasaga Beach (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old whose case was listed as community transmission.
  • Barrie (21): Thirteen people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, three people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Five cases is linked to close contact, and three were community-acquired. 
  • Innisfil (19): Five youth under 18 years old, two people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, five people between 45 and 64 years old, and four people between 65 and 79 years old. Seven cases are linked to close contact, and three were community-acquired. 
  • Bradford West Gwillimbury (9): One youth under 18 years old, one person between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, three people between 45 and 64 tears old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. 
  • Midland (2): One youth under 18 years old, and one person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Tiny (2): One youth under 18 years old and one person between 18 and 34 years old. 
  • Tay (2): One person between 18 and 34 years old and one person between 65 and 79 years old.
  • Essa (7): One youth under 18, one person between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. One case is attributed to close contact. 
  • New Tecumseth (20): Five youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, three people between 35 and 44 years old, and nine people between 45 and 64 years old. Two cases were linked to close contact, and two were community-acquired.
  • Adjala-Tosorontio (2): Two people between 45 and 64 years old. One case was community-acquired.

The health unit does sometimes remove a case or move them based on further investigation of location data. The chart below reflects updated totals for each municipality as reported by the health unit on April 28.
