Accused in double homicide in Collingwood appears in Barrie court

Cameron Gardiner, 57, who was released on bail July 22, scheduled to be back in court Dec. 3 on two counts of second-degree murder

The man accused of murdering two people in Collingwood last winter made an appearance in a Barrie courtroom today.

Cameron Gardiner, who was released on bail July 22 after being held at Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene, is scheduled to be back in court on Dec. 3 for the start of his pretrial.

Gardiner, 57, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the Jan. 22 deaths of 52-year-old Dean Copkov and 42-year-old Donovan Bass, both from Wasaga Beach.

The two men died at Gardiner's home on Matthew Way in Collingwood, near Hume Street and Highway 26.

The accused had appeared in front of a judge three times in Collingwood before his counsel had the case moved to Barrie for future appearances.

While police are not releasing the cause of death for the victims, witnesses have said they heard three loud bangs, believed to be gunshots, the sound of shattering glass and screams around 1:30 a.m., Jan. 22.

Police have previously said there was an "altercation" at the residence which resulted in the deaths of two people.

"It is believed a third person, who fled the scene, accompanied the two deceased individuals to this location," police said in a news release issued in January.

The third person, believed to be a male, has not been identified by police.

Police were alerted to the scene by a 911 call.
