All-day bridge tournament aids Alzheimer Society (4 photos)

Event hosted by Orillia club raises more than $3,000; 'It's important that we support local charities,' says bridge club member

Friday may be the longest day of the year, but Wednesday was a long day for a local group of bridge players.

The Orillia Duplicate Bridge Club held A Day of Bridge at the Masonic Hall to raise money for the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County.

Clubs across North America take part in the annual event. In Orillia, 160 games were played Wednesday and more than $3,000 was raised.

“Alzheimer’s affects everybody,” said Jean Belfour, who organized the event with Janice Upenieks. “Bridge is very, very good for your mind and it’s very social.”

When asked why it was important to support the Alzheimer Society, bridge club member Helen Perry said, with a laugh, “Look at my hair,” pointing to her white hair.

“Alzheimer’s particularly is of importance to seniors,” she said, “and it’s important that we support local charities.”

While most of those in attendance were seniors, the club welcomes members of all ages. More information can be found here.

Belfour thanked the Masons for donating the hall for the day, as well as local merchants who donated items for the raffle.
