Mariposa House Hospice (MHH) thanks the community for a tremendous response to the combined Angel Tree and Giving Tuesday fundraising initiatives this year, raising $35,770.30 for Angel Tree and $17,250 for the Giving Tuesday campaign for a total of $53,020.30.

Grief is an experience that we will all encounter at one point in our life. When we reflect on memories of Christmases and holiday celebrations past, we can usually recall good memories of being together with family and friends who made our lives better, happier, warmer and kinder.

Whether your grief journey started recently, or you have been missing a loved one from your holiday celebrating for many years, our longing is the same: We wish we could see them again and have them at that vacant place at the table.

While it’s not possible for them to be with us, MHH created a way to honour and remember publicly and continue to support those who are currently going through end-of-life care at our beautiful 1140 Brodie Dr. location.

The Angel Tree with its beautiful, glass angel ornaments was generously donated by Kristopher Orchard and Jamie Campbell, owners of O.C. Emporium Inc., six years ago in order to raise funds for MHH. Bob Willsey, owner of Mariposa Market, has hosted the tree in his renowned downtown Orillia store for all six years.

With many thanks to both of these generous donors and the many volunteers, MHH staff, businesses, and individual donors stepping up to raise funds for Mariposa House Hospice’s palliative end-of-life care, just shy of $140,000 has been raised by the lighting of the Angel Tree since 2017.

People of all ages and life experiences dropped by the 2022 Angel Tree to place an angel in memory of a loved one and donate to MHH. One young girl stopped by recently with her dad, of her own initiative, to place an angel for her poppa, who recently passed away, as a way to remember him this Christmas.

Lynn Thomas, donor relations co-ordinator at MHH, expressed her thanks to all donors.

“Whether the contribution is the minimum donation of $10, or from a woman who is experiencing homelessness who gave $12 to remember her mother, or a large corporate donation like the recent Jim Wilson Chevrolet’s of $10,000, each and every donation is so appreciated by our team at MHH," said Thomas.

"When we collaboratively care for each loved one who comes to visit their person staying at Mariposa House, we realize that this is a community of caring people providing this opportunity for a residential hospice at no cost to our residents.”

Thank you to the many Giving Tuesday donors who stepped up for the one-day campaign on Nov. 29 and gave a minimum of $100 and received a gift of an angel ornament donated by O.C. Emporium Inc. in appreciation for their support.
