Due to the recent extreme snowfall, the City of Orillia’s Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) has rescheduled the kick off to Pitch-In Week event to Saturday, May 12, 2018 at Veterans’ Park from 9 a.m. to noon. The event was originally scheduled for this weekend. EAC members will be set up in the park to provide free Pitch-In garbage bags and to register and deploy volunteers to clean up green spaces, parks and neighbourhoods across the City.

Each year during Pitch-In Week volunteers work City-wide to clean up garbage accumulated over the winter. It’s all part of a national campaign encouraging people to work together to maintain a clean and green environment. The Saturday kick-off is lead annually by local naturalist Bob Bowles.

"The recent 20 cm of snow we have received makes it truly difficult to have a successful trail and park clean up,” said Bowles. “It is our goal to show environmental leadership and educate all ages about the volume and impact of litter on our shared public spaces. The problem is that the litter is once again very well hidden under an unusual amount of new, heavy snow. We hope that participants can make the change to Saturday, May 12.”

Volunteers are the backbone of Pitch-In Week. Last year, in more than 750 Canadian communities, more than 1.5 million volunteers participated in various environmental clean-ups and other events.

The City of Orillia is a city of 31,000 people in the heart of Ontario’s Lake Country on the shores of Lake Couchiching and Lake Simcoe. Visit our website at orillia.ca.
