A series of seminars is driving home the message to seniors that knowledge is power.

Information Orillia has been hosting sessions on a number of topics, including dementia, fall prevention and technology. On Friday, the focus will be on driver’s licence renewal.

“A lot of people start feeling anxious about it, and it’s not always a clear process,” said Karissa Barker, seniors vitality liaison with Information Orillia. “(This workshop) is to reduce anxiety.”

A representative from the Ministry of Transportation will be on hand at Friday’s seminar to provide information and answer questions. The session will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Orillia Public Library. It is free, but those interested in attending are asked to register by calling Information Orillia at 705-326-7743.

The series for seniors is particularly important in a place like Orillia, Barker said.

“Because Orillia has a big senior population, Information Orillia felt it was something we could be pouring more focus into. The world’s always changing and it can be hard to keep up,” she said. “We want to help (seniors) feel more comfortable and confident in their lives.”

After Friday’s seminar, the next one will take place Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The topic will be fire safety. Contact Information Orillia for more details.
