A substance sprayed in a downtown apartment building earlier this week was likely bear spray, police said.

However, that has yet to be confirmed as the investigation is continuing.

Several residents in an apartment on Market Street, behind the Orillia Public Library, were treated by paramedics and released at the scene after police responded Monday at about 9:30 p.m., said Orillia OPP Const. Martin Hill.

Police are not yet commenting on the circumstances that led to the substance being sprayed and whether any charges are being laid.

“This is an isolated incident and there is not a threat to public safety,” Hill said.
