Knights of Columbus Orillia Council 1428 is hosting a crucial 50/50 draw as a fundraiser so they can still support their various user groups such as Special Olympics.

Knights of Columbus Councils worldwide are currently hosting their annual 50/50 draw in support of various charities.

Funds collected from tickets sold to local residents will benefit the Knights of Columbus Orillia Council 1428 and the many local charities and organizations they support.

“The Knights do fundraising for all sorts of different organizations; some of them we deal with year to year, and some of them are requests that come up for certain things, like a one-off,” explained Sean Burns, Chancellor for Knights of Columbus Orillia Council 1428.

“Special Olympics are a group that we are involved with regularly. We’ve done meals for the Canadian Cancer Society in the past, we provide money for food banks, we have a coats for kids program, and that’s just to name a few.”

Typically, the Knights of Columbus raise money through in-person charity events. Each year they have at least a dozen meal and barbecue fundraisers, which have been put on hold due to the pandemic.

“We can’t have group settings anymore, so we’ve lost a big revenue stream because of that,” Burns says.

“We need to draw attention to the fact that we are not able to do fundraising like we used to, so we would appreciate any kind of interest in the 50/50 draw. We want people to know we are still out there doing what we can.”

The demand from Knights of Columbus user groups remains high, and the Knights remain committed to raising money for those in need, he said.

“(The 50/50 draw) has always been a big fundraising event for our group, and because this is the first year it’s going virtual, we don’t know what the expectations are, but we are hopeful for a great result,” Burns said.

There are four separate draws for the 50/50 fundraiser this year; the next one will take place on April 20, and the current take-home prize is more than $14,000.

Tickets start at $10 for 15, $20 for 40, and $40.00 for 100, and you can purchase them here.
