It looks a lot like winter, but for most of the new year it hasn't really felt like it. That's about to change.
Expect extreme freezing temperatures across the Simcoe Muskoka region.
According to Environment Canada, it's about to be a dozen degrees cooler than normal in the coming days, with temperatures hovering around the -15 C mark on Wednesday and then dropping to a bone-chilling -26 C by Friday.
"It's certainly the coldest (this year) we've seen so far," said Dave Phillips, a senior climatologist for Environment Canada.
Phillips said while the arctic air will be short lived, fairly strong winds will accompany it.
"It doesn't diminish the fact that it will be extremely cold for several hours," he said. "With that wind chill, it can be very dangerous and freeze flesh in minutes."
People are urged to check the weather before going outside, dress in layers and consider rescheduling activities or limiting time outdoors. Checking in on vulnerable friends, neighbours, and relatives is also suggested.
