Borden Air Show takes off this weekend

'Everyone on the base is extremely excited for this weekend — it's all the talk around here,' says public affairs officer for air show

If you forgot what time of year it was, the booming sound of the Canadian Snowbirds doing practice runs in the sky was a great reminder.

The Canadian Armed Forces Day and Air Show at CFB Borden is back and expected to be the biggest one in many years.

On Friday, the Snowbirds got some final test runs in before Saturday and Sunday’s big event, which is expected to have a record crowd.

As the public affairs officer for the airshow, Lt. Aaron Niles said he was excited about this weekend’s event.

“The last time we did this was 2018 and we had about 18,000 people. Right now, we’re already above what was already the pre-sale tickets and we are expecting anywhere from 25,000 to 30,000 people over the weekend,” Niles told BarrieToday during a media event at the local military base, which is located about 20 minutes west of Barrie.

“You could say it has been two years of planning but four years in the making," he added.

Along with the Snowbirds, the CF-18s, Northern Stars, the Manfred Radius Sailplane and others will be on hand to entertain the weekend crowds.

“Everyone on the base is extremely excited for this weekend it's all the talk around here,” Niles said. “We know there has been a need and a want for us to showcase what the Air Force can do at the air show, but that includes the Army and Navy, who can do many awesome displays as well.”

The air show runs Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an all-day family adventure with helicopter rides, a new Brewfest craft beer festival, inflatable fun, interactive activities, and historic military displays.
