BORN TO READ

You can feel it in the air – that crispness in the mornings, the sound of geese starting to fly, and the leaves of a few trees turning orange and yellow. Another school year is upon us, and despite the pandemic, children across Ontario have returned to the classroom.
The ability to read well is one of the best predictors of success in school and life. So engaging children in exploring books from a young age is critical in getting them ready to acquire this skill.
Born to Read is a charity that does just that – provides books to families of newborns to encourage reading together starting at birth.
Hearing lots of vocabulary, sharing time with parents in a joyful activity, and engaging in verbal exchanges, are all excellent ways of stimulating baby’s language and setting the stage for a lifetime of reading.
Since March 2019, two books have been given to the families of 1,200 newborns at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, as well as information about children’s library programs and library membership.
Even during the coronavirus pandemic, deliveries of books have continued to the maternity ward of our local hospital.
Born to Read is a partnership between Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, the Orillia Public Library and Manticore Books. Donations of as little as $10 can keep this worthwhile charity going. Donors will receive a tax receipt.
