Bring your sense of humour to Coldwater for 'A Little Quickie'

Village Players of Coldwater presenting laugh-a-minute comedy; 'It's a very funny show,' says theatre company official

The Village Players of Coldwater are presenting A Little Quickie in June. The cast is comprised of Kirsten Kana, David Tofts, John Giurin, Pam Martin, Christie Devine and Luke Sauve.

Coldwater does not have its own theatre, but the village west of Orillia boasts a thriving community theatre group that stages impressive, often provocative, shows twice a year.

This summer, the Village Players of Coldwater are presenting A Little Quickie, a laugh-a-minute, rollicking comedy that will push the limits.

“It is adult content,” says Pam Martin, the president of the Coldwater theatre company who also stars in the play and serves as its director.

“There’s no nudity or swearing, but it’s about adultery … so it’s not recommended for children,” she said.

Martin said the show, with a small cast of six - featuring three couples - is about a two-man comedy team from the 1970s.

“It’s about these comedians, one who is married and one who isn’t,” explained Martin. “It’s about the road to their success and their demise.”

She says the story chronicles their rise and their split. “One becomes successful and one goes to work at a Chinese Restaurant,” she says with a chuckle.

Three months into twice-weekly practices, Martin said the cast can’t stop laughing.

“Even three months in, we’re still laughing at the jokes and the lines … it’s very funny,” said Martin.

But keeping the theatre company thriving is no laughing matter. It takes countless volunteers, community involvement and a lot of hard work, Martin said.

“Since we don’t have our own theatre, we have to build the theatre every time we put on a show,” said Martin.

She noted long-time volunteer Dave Athron, a senior, has been busy creating the set upstairs at the Coldwater Community Centre, where the play will take centre stage.

“It’s also more expensive for us than others because we have to rent the facility, we have to pay for storage for props and costumes … it certainly makes it a little more difficult.”

However, those behind the production - from the actors to the prop builders - take their roles seriously, Martin said.

“I know a lot of people probably wonder what kind of theatre a place like Coldwater could have,” said Martin. “Anyone who has ever come to one of our shows has been amazed. We put on really good shows.”

She said the importance of the Village Players, a mainstay in Coldwater for 28 years, transcends the stage.

“It keeps people involved and it brings people into the community,” said Martin. “The arts seem to be ignored by governments, townships. Not only is it good for any community to have some kind of arts program, it gives kids an opportunity to pursue theatre.”

She noted it’s a lot cheaper than sports and provides a chance for kids and youth to get a glimpse into acting, backstage roles and learning to work with others.

“The kids get so excited on show nights. It’s amazing to see their family, their teachers and neighbours come to see them perform,” Martin said.

And while attention is on getting ready for A Little Quickie, the Village Players are also busy preparing for their fall show - a pantomime called Frosted, based on the Disney hit, Frozen.

“We need lots of people of all ages including children for that one,” said Martin.

Those interested in trying out for a role are welcome to show up, with music, to auditions at the Coldwater United Church. Those will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. June 17 and June 18.

In the meantime, Martin encourages you to call her at 705-686-3883 or visit the Christmas Villager shop in downtown Coldwater to pick up tickets for A Little Quickie.

Tickets cost $20 and include admission to the show in addition to non-alcoholic beverages and snacks at intermission.

The show will be presented June 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 8 p.m. There will also be 1 p.m. matinees on June 16 and June 23.
