Challenge accepted: Severn, Oro-Medonte councils taking part in snowman competition

Orillia Mayor Steve Clarke will take on role of 'supposedly neutral' judge in lighthearted competition

Residents of Severn and Oro-Medonte have their own snowman-making challenges going on, but their council members want to get in on the fun, too.

Severn Deputy Mayor Jane Dunlop issued a council-versus-council snowman competition, and Oro-Medonte Mayor Harry Hughes accepted.

“I’m just trying to get more people out and about, and it’s just good camaraderie among councils,” Dunlop said. “Let’s get through this COVID and have some fun.”

Severn council members who choose to participate will create their own snowmen on their properties. Oro-Medonte councillors will do the same and the township will submit the best one to be judged.

Orillia Mayor Steve Clarke has agreed to be that neutral judge.

“Supposedly neutral,” Hughes quipped.

Clarke is expected to choose a winner on Feb. 2, Groundhog Day.

Dunlop said if Oro-Medonte wins, council members will receive toques featuring Severn’s new logo. That’s cold comfort, according to Hughes.

“We’ll encourage them to up the ante. We want a night at the pub when COVID’s over,” he said.

Both Dunlop and Hughes feel the lighthearted, friendly competition is needed right now.

“We kind of know each other, but it’s nice to really get to know your neighbouring councillors and have some fun,” Dunlop said.

They both hope the council-versus-council challenge will also draw attention to the community-wide snowman initiatives that are going on, and they encourage residents to take part.
