For the first time since 2019, the Orillia Hike for Hospice will be taking place in-person.

Hospice Orillia and Mariposa House Hospice are once again collaborating to host an annual fundraising event that helps ensure that Orillia and the surrounding communities have access to the hospice services they deserve.

“We’re excited to finally gather in person again for the Hike for Hospice after a very long two years. As in years past, all funds raised will stay in our community and will support the visiting hospice programs and grief and bereavement supports led by Hospice Orillia as well as the operations of Mariposa House Hospice, our five-bed residential hospice,” said Whitney Vowels, executive director, North Simcoe Muskoka Hospice Palliative Care Network and Hospice Orillia.

“We cannot thank this community enough for your ongoing support over these past two years and look forward to seeing you May 1.”

This year the Hike for Hospice will take place on Sunday, May 1 at Couchiching Beach Park. Check-in will open at noon with hikers taking off at 1 pm. Before hitting the trail, participants will have the opportunity to join a pre-hike warm-up hosted by Peak Performance Fitness.

“The Hike for Hospice is a wonderful opportunity for collaboration, and it is a perfect example of community spirit. Mariposa House is a new, five-bed hospice residence that offers end-of-life palliative care in a comfortable, home-like setting where a nurse and support worker are on site 24/7,” said Annalise Stenekes, executive director, Mariposa House Hospice.

“We rely on community support to thrive, which is one reason why the hike is so important. The goal for 2022 is to raise $25,000, which will support two hospice organizations. At Mariposa House, we work closely with Hospice Orillia to provide the full continuum of care for those who are living with a progressive, life-threatening illness or grieving the loss of a loved one.”

Both Hospice Orillia and Mariposa House are partially funded. This means they rely on financial support from the community, including through events like the Hike for Hospice.

Supporters of the hike should be proud to know the difference they are making in their community. One hundred per cent of the funds raised during the Orillia Hike for Hospice stay local and help both organizations be sustainable, ensuring that they will be there for you should you need them.

“New for this year, participants who collect pledges will receive a hike kit upon check-in on the day of the hike,” said Amanda Tevelde, communication, fundraising and community relations specialist, Hospice Orillia.

“In order to ensure we have enough hike kits available, we ask that participants pre-register by either visiting the online registration platform or contacting [email protected]. The kits are currently set to include a T-shirt, ChapStick and snacks, along with other items. Hikers will not want to miss out on this year’s hike-kit," said Tevelde.

There are a variety of ways you can support the 2022 Hike for Hospice. You can participate in the hike, make a donation online, donate a prize, donate to the hike kits or become a corporate sponsor.

Whichever method you choose, your support helps to ensure that Hospice Orillia and Mariposa House can continue providing the services that your community needs.

In order to secure a hike kit, participants are asked to register ahead of the hike via the online registration platform at https://give.charityvillage.com/81ugy3.
