City thanks crossing guards for keeping kids safe

Fourth annual Crossing Guard Appreciation Day event held at city hall

Orillia’s crossing guards were honoured Wednesday at city hall.

The city hosted a Crossing Guard Appreciation Day event, during which Mayor Steve Clarke thanked them for the important work they do to keep local kids safe.

“I live near a school. As I drive by, I see your interaction with the kids and parents on a daily basis,” he said. “You are a wonderful (credit) to the city.”

Crossing guard Borden Schubert decided to share the love.

“Behind every good crossing guard is a better boss,” he told Nancy Wilding, the city’s crossing guard supervisor.

Cheryl Sears-Fournier, a crossing guard for two years, appreciated the recognition Wednesday.

“We need to be acknowledged for our efforts,” she said. “It’s a very important job for the safety of children — and adults as well who come through the crosswalks.”

Sears-Fournier, who is stationed at Gill and Simcoe streets, became a crossing guard because she “saw the need for safety in our area.”

If only drivers would do the same.

“It’s a matter of getting drivers to slow down. It’s always a problem,” she said. “Don’t be in such a hurry, and be observant. It’s kids’ safety you’re putting at risk.”

Each of the city’s crossing guards received new parkas and rain suits Wednesday.

This is the fourth year Orillia has held Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, but it’s the first time it has been marked across the province.
