'It’s a very high traffic area; there’s no actual traffic calming measures in place along these two intersections,' says Coun. Czetwerzuk

The intersection at Stone Ridge Boulevard and University Avenue is one of several areas in west Orillia that city staff will look into and provide safety improvement options for both pedestrians and vehicles.

Improved safety measures for pedestrians and vehicles alike could be coming to the West Ridge area.

At Monday’s council meeting, councillors Jeff Czetwerzuk and Jay Fallis introduced an inquiry motion requesting city staff to look into improved pedestrian crossing options along West Ridge Boulevard, between the Monarch Drive intersection and the Hunter Valley Road/Stone Ridge Boulevard/University Avenue intersection.

In addition, Czetwerzuk and Fallis requested options for improving vehicle safety when turning from Vanessa Drive or Stone Ridge Boulevard onto University Avenue.

Council supported the request, which will include an analysis of traffic, pedestrian crossing, and turning movement counts in the area.

Czetwerzuk highlighted that a child recently got hit by a vehicle at Vanessa Drive and University Avenue, and both councillors said numerous people have expressed safety concerns about the area.

“The reason why Coun. Fallis and myself brought this up is because of genuine concern from several community members,” he said. “It’s a very high traffic area; there’s no actual traffic calming measures in place along these two intersections.”

“Many residents have raised concern about this area on West Ridge Boulevard … and I think it's really important that we look at some options there to address (it),” added Fallis.
