Couple escapes early-morning house fire in Midland

Bungalow engulfed when fire department arrived on scene; Elderly couple OK after blaze

A Midland couple escaped an overnight house fire that destroyed their home.

Midland firefighters arrived at the Eighth Street home shortly after midnight and worked to control the blaze while ensuring it didn't spread to neighbouring homes.

Located between Quebec and Ottawa street, damage to the beige-sided bungalow appeared most prominent in the living-room area and an attached garage while the front entranceway looked virtually untouched with a seasonal planter, shovel and jug of ice-melter resting on the front stoop.

A neighbour, who asked not to be identified, said he was awoken by police pounding on his front door at about midnight.

"They (firefighters) took a couple of hours to get it under control," the man said.

He said the couple, who he thinks are in their 70s or 80s, didn't have any pets and are now staying with their daughter in Wyevale.
