Deep freeze sends many people indoors (7 photos)

Some hardy Orillians ventured out on to wind-swept hills and lakes

Plunging temperatures kept most people indoors and chilly winds were the only attendees at the outdoor skating rinks in the city.

Outdoor rinks at Hilcrest Park, First Baptist Church, and Lake Couchiching are now in good shape and the rink at Homewood Park is also open and welcoming skaters. More information about schedules and conditions of local city-managed parks are availble here. As a result of the bone-chilling temperatures, biting winds, and snowfall during the latter part of the day, most people were happy to stay indoors.

We caught some of them cozying up in the library. Staff said they had seen one of the largest groups — 41 kids and parents — attending the library’s family story time Saturday morning.

The YMCA was also teeming with activity as well, with swimming lessons, basketball, and squash matches taking place at the location on Peter Street North.
