Dozens of Orillia athletes will compete at Ontario Winter Games

Wrestlers represent largest contingent of local athletes

There are just nine days until the biggest multi-sport event in Orillia’s history begins. With that in mind, OrilliaMatters is publishing a daily countdown to help you get ready for the 2018 Ontario Winter Games.

More than 3,000 athletes from all corners of the province will be in our region from March 1-4 for the 2018 Ontario Winter Games. They will be competing for medals and memories in 25 different sports.

There will be more than 25 athletes from Orillia participating in the various competitions. The largest local contingent is comprised of wrestlers. Nine local wrestlers – Zarah Yglesias, Jack Brazda, Chloe Minten, Keith Scott, Cashius Aitken, Deominic Ritchie, Rain Steele, Ian Stirling and Stephanie Tonn (official) – will represent Orillia in the wrestling competition slated for Twin Lakes Secondary School.

Five local athletes will go for gold in the cross-country skiing competition at Horseshoe Resort. The Orillia contingent includes Sierra Macdonald, Leyla Barber, Erin Doble, Julia Shannon and Reid Kidner. Orillia’s Julie Eriksen and Jack German will compete in alpine skiing at Blue Mountain, while Aidan Colebrook will represent Orillia in the snowboard competition at the Collingwood ski hill.

Maddy Parr, Alex Bertolo and Bill Brown will compete in the curling competition at Barnfield Point, while Daniel Patriquin and Lesley Doherty (official) will participate in figure skating at Rotary Place. Orillia’s Sam Galloway will compete in speed skating in Huntsville.

A trio of local athletes – Kaydan Davenport, Liam Weaver and Nevin Hawke – will be competing in the kickboxing competition at the North Simcoe Sports and Recreation Complex in Midland, while Orillia’s Rex Dorkings will be among the officials keeping an eye on the bustling lanes at Orillia Bowl during the 5-pin bowling competition.
