One person is dead after a vehicle crashed into a tree in Oro-Medonte Township Wednesday afternoon.
“The motor vehicle struck a tree and then burst into flames,” said OPP Sgt. Peter Leon. “It was a devastating fire.”
Because of the fire, it’s not certain if the victim, the lone occupant in the vehicle, was a man or woman. The vehicle and the remains were taken to the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto. A post-mortem was scheduled for Friday, Leon said.
Leon said the single-vehicle collision, which occurred on Line 12, just north of Horseshoe Valley Road, happened Wednesday afternoon. It was a mostly sunny day; weather was likely not a factor, he said.
Barrie OPP was assisted by the OPP's Technical Traffic Collision Investigation Unit to try to determine the cause the crash. “At this point, it’s still under investigation,” Leon told OrilliaMatters.
He said the priority, for now, is to identify the victim “for the sake of the family.” He expects to have more information early next week.
