An early-morning kitchen fire has shut down a popular Highway 11 restaurant south of Orillia.
Roree Payment, deputy fire chief of operations for Oro-Medonte Township, said crews were called to the blaze just after 3 a.m. this morning for a fire in the kitchen at the Husky Gas Bar On Highway 11.
Crews from Shanty Bay, East Oro and Moonstone stations responded to the fire at the building, located on the southbound side of the highway between Line 4 and Line 5.
There were eight fire vehicles and 20 firefighters on scene, Payment explained, noting the fire was quickly extinguished.
Damage is estimated at $10,000 and limited to the kitchen area. Payment said the cause of the fire was attributed to "unattended cooking."
There were no injuries and all the residents in the apartments above were evacuated safely, Payment told OrilliaMatters.
He said the restaurant is closed, but the gas bar is open to the public.
