Egg hunt brings festive fun to downtown Orillia (10 photos)

Estimated 1,000 kids take part in annual Easter tradition

Downtown Orillia was hopping Saturday during the annual Easter egg hunt.

“It’s fun for the kids and they enjoy it,” said Amanda Romaine. “It brings families together.”

The Orillia resident brought her two-year-old niece, Hailey Romaine, to collect eggs, which could be turned in for pieces of chocolate.

The event, organized by the Downtown Orillia Management Board (DOMB), also featured face painting, a scavenger hunt and the opportunity to take photos with the Easter bunny.

“I think it’s great for the kids, and it’s outdoors,” said Andrew Shuttleworth, who was helping his four-year-old daughter with her basket, which was brimming with eggs. “It’s the thing I love about this community: We come together for all sorts of events.”

DOMB manager Lisa Thomson-Roop said at least 1,000 kids participated in the event, which has been around for at least two decades.

Families started at the egg exchange station in front of the Orillia Opera House with instructions from DOMB staff and volunteers. They walked along Mississaga Street collecting eggs that were then brought back to the exchange station for some chocolate. Thomson-Roop said 80 pounds' worth of chocolate was given out.

“It’s the first kick-off for the upcoming busy events season,” Thomson-Roop said.

Every year, she sees new faces, and some old ones who come back because the egg hunt has become a tradition.

“You come downtown as a family, do a little activity here, shop downtown and make an afternoon of it,” she said.
