NEWS RELEASE

ORILLIA PUBLIC LIBRARY

**********************

The Orillia Public Library will host a Family History Festival on Saturday, June 16 from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. The Festival encourages Orillia and Area residents to become more involved in finding their roots. Whether you are just starting to research your family tree or have been working on it for years, you are certain to learn some new tips and tricks.

More than a dozen genealogy experts will be on hand to help with your research, including how to search online databases Ancestry.com and Family Search, learning how to write family stories and how to scrapbook priceless photos. Discover if your ancestor was a soldier or came to Canada as British Home Child.

Several organizations will also be on site, including the Simcoe County Archives, the British Home Child Advocacy & Research Association and the Orillia Museum of Art and History, ready to share interesting and fun ways to connect you to information. Local historians and authors, Marcel Rousseau and Dave Town, will be on hand as well as local bookstore, Manticore Books, with a variety of genealogical and historical books to purchase. Bring whatever information you have and the experts will share their knowledge and experience to help you find that missing clue to get you to the next generation in your tree.

Our Local History Room will be open for the day and families have the unique opportunity to check out all the fascinating tidbits and treasures contained within. We live in a city with a rich history, so why not dive in as a family and learn a little about it? Maybe you live in a century home. Maybe your family has lived in the area for generations and you would like to learn about their life. Or maybe you’ve heard that Lake Simcoe is rumoured to be home to our very own sea monster, Igopogo, better known as “Kempenfelt Kelly”. Whatever your queries, families can bring their questions and staff will do their best to uncover all available information. These sessions are family-friendly, best for children age 6+ due to the fragile nature of some materials. (Registration is required for Local History Room sessions.)

Genealogy presentations will also be scheduled throughout the day. Visit our website at www.orilliapubliclibrary.ca for the Event Schedule.

Mark your calendars and visit the Library for this free family-friendly event! Everyone is welcome. For more information contact the Library at 705-325-2556 or [email protected].
