First Nations literary giants 'gather' in Orillia (9 photos)

Huronia Cultural Campus presented Gathering First Nations Literary Festival at Lakehead University

Some of the biggest names in Canadian Indigenous literature were in Orillia Saturday at Lakehead University as part of Gathering First Nations Literary Festival, which was hosted by Huronia Cultural Campus (HCC).

About 150 people attended the event that started in the afternoon and wrapped up at around 9:30 p.m.

The award-winning authors, such as Lee Maracle, Drew Hayden Taylor, Armand Garnet Ruffo, and Tanya Talaga, read from their works and answered questions asked by audience members. As well, Maracle read from the works of Richard Wagamese and offered a tribute to Arthur Manuel.

Actor Sid Bobb’s performance from Wagamese’s book, Indian Horse, moved audience members.

David Kanatawakhon-Maracle, a Mohawk from the Tyendinaga First Nation, shared the process which prompted him to create dictionaries and textbooks in the Mohawk and Oneida languages.
