Orillia’s first ride-share service is up and running.
The city approved a licence in March for Facedrive to operate in town. It’s been slow going during the COVID-19 pandemic, but one of the local drivers wants to spread the word that the service is available.
“I’m trying to promote Orillia’s first ride share so it can thrive,” said Jason Coldwell. “I’d like to let them know that there is a ride share in Orillia that can be beneficial to everyone.”
Coldwell has been driving for the company for about two weeks and said it’s “been hard” so far.
“I don’t know if it’s because of the pandemic or if it’s because people don’t know about this or they don’t have the means to use it,” he said.
To use Facedrive, people have to download the app. All payment is made through the app. Cash is not an option.
Coldwell said the service is a good alternative to taking a cab.
“I wanted to help Orillia get more transportation so they don’t have long wait times for taxis,” he said. “People are tired of long wait times for cabs in Orillia.”
Coldwell was drawn to Facedrive, in part, because “it’s a Canadian-based company and it’s an eco-friendly company.” A portion of the fares go toward tree planting in the province.
Coldwell is one of only a few Facedrive drivers in town. Because he works a day job, he drives for the company on weekday evenings and, on weekends, during the day and evening.
He assures potential riders Facedrive is taking safety precautions seriously during the pandemic. Vehicles are sanitized regularly and drivers wear masks. Passengers must wear masks if they’re sitting in the front seat.
Drivers also have to undergo criminal record checks.
