Community Builders is pleased to announce that intake is happening for their next 16-week paid training program, which has been generously supported by The Home Depot Canada Foundation’s TradeWorx program.
TradeWorx was launched on Sept. 27 of this year and is a new targeted investment to combat youth homelessness by creating opportunities for career education and skilled trades training.
Through its initial $1-million investment, one hundred Canadian youth who have experienced homelessness or barriers to employment will receive the training and social supports necessary to work in the skilled trades.
Community Builders’ Construction Training Program (CTP) starts on Jan. 17, 2022 and is a 16-week paid program for women and men aged 18 to 29 years old who have barriers to employment which include, but aren’t limited to, a criminal record, being a member of a minority group, past drug/alcohol addictions, and a long-term history of unemployment.
The CTP is designed as pre-employment training and focuses on giving its participants the tools that they need to succeed for a life-long career in the trades. Trainees are taught employment readiness skills, life skills, and most importantly, they’ll get real on-the-job construction training in a supportive and supervised environment.
Joe was a trainee who graduated from the program earlier this year, and is now working full-time as a general labourer.
“Before Community Builders, I struggled with housing, and getting back on my feet. I was living on the streets homeless, and so I wanted to enter the construction trainee program to gain some trades experience, learn new things, and to try and better myself," he said.
Community Builders co-founder and CEO Brandon Day reports that he loves seeing men and women gain confidence that they didn’t have before they came to the program.
“Many people who join our construction trainee program don’t have the support or opportunities most of us enjoy, but when they get the opportunities and they join our community, it gives them a sense of belonging and encouragement to move forward. They begin dreaming about what their future could look like with their new found skills and supportive community behind them," Day said.
During the program, trainees will receive a personal case manager who will work with them to create an individualized employment plan and pathways that will lead them to a prosperous career in the trades of their choice.
The case manager can also help to identify and support them through any barriers that could hinder their training or employment such as transportation, mental health, housing, or food security.
