The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported 84 new COVID-19 cases and two deaths in today's update (April 7).
The deaths reported today include one Bradford West Gwillimbury residents and one Innisfil resident.
There are 681 active, lab-confirmed cases in the region, most of which are in Simcoe County.
The health unit has reported 1,525 cases have screened positive and/or been confirmed with sequencing as variant cases. Of those, 316 are still active cases. Screening and sequencing tests can take several days, and sometimes results are not returned until after the individual has recovered.
Sequencing and PCR tests have confirmed 1,124 cases of the B.1.1.7 (variant strain that originated in the UK) in Simcoe Muskoka. There have also been 18 cases of the P.1 variant that first originated in Brazil in the region and two cases of the B.1.351 strain that originated in South Africa.
Since the start of the pandemic, the local health unit has confirmed 8,208 cases of COVID-19 with 7,226 of those cases recovered and 205 cases ending in death.
There are 41 people from Simcoe County hospitalized with COVID-19, which includes four new hospitalizations since Thursday. Thirteen people are in intensive care units. The ICU patients range in age from 30 to over 80 years old.
The health unit has administered 111,788 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 in Simcoe Muskoka, with 2,186 doses given yesterday.
The new cases reported in Simcoe County and Muskoka District today include (case transmission is under investigation unless otherwise specified):
- Orillia (4): One person between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old.
- Collingwood (4): Two people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person between 45 and 64 years old. One case is linked to close contact.
- Barrie (25): Five youth under 18 years old, 17 people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, one person between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old. Three cases are attributed to community transmission and two are linked to close contact.
- Springwater (2): Two people between 18 and 34 years old.
- Innisfil (9): Two people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, three people between 45 and 64 years old, two people between 65 and 79 years old, and one person over 79 years old. One case is attributed to community transmission.
- Bradford West Gwillimbury (16): Two youth under 18 years old, five people between 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, six people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person between 65 and 79 years old.
- Midland (1): One person between 45 and 64 years old.
- Tiny (1): One person between 65 and 79 years old.
- Essa (5): One person 18 and 34 years old, two people between 35 and 44 years old, and two people between 65 and 79 years old. One case is linked to close contact and one to community transmission.
- New Tecumseth (11): Four youth under 18 years old, three people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, two people between 45 and 64 years old, and one person over 79 years old.
- Adjala-Tosorontio (4): Two people between 18 and 34 years old, one person between 35 and 44 years old, and one person 45 and 64 years old.
- There are two new cases in Muskoka, both in Huntsville.
