This one’s for the girls.

A group of local women has organized an afternoon of free fellowship and fun this weekend.

The Women Celebrating Women event will take place Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Best Western Plus Mariposa Inn and Conference Centre. The event will feature guest speakers, live music, hair and makeup tips, mini-makeovers, yoga, self-defence and more.

It’s a free event and is open to girls and women ages 12 and older.

“It’s to celebrate women, give them resources and empower them,” said Nicole Hepinstall, of Sharp Image Salon and Spa, one of the organizers.

It’s important for women to support each other rather than always be in competition, she said, noting one example of that is the fact she is working with someone from Avaia Salon and Spa, a business competitor, to organize the event.

“It shows how women can work together and not always have to compete,” Hepinstall said.

It’s especially timely to offer an event like this in the age of social media, she added.

“You see other people’s lives and feel like you have to live up to other people’s standards,” she said. “We need to realize it’s important to lift each other up.”

While the point of the event is to celebrate the women within, there will be an opportunity for attendees to receive some special treatment such as manicures, makeup and massages.

“They’ll go away feeling better about themselves,” Hepinstall said. “You don’t have to spend anything. Come here and feel good about yourself and meet other women. Don’t be intimidated. Anyone is welcome.”
