Fundraiser aids a local organization that 'really lifts people up'

MP's beef supper raises thousands for Orillia and District Literacy Council; 'When you’re a very small charity, $5,000 is a big deal,' says official

The Orillia and District Literacy Council is always looking for volunteers — kind of like an appetite that must be continuously sated.

An event Thursday might have helped in both ways.

Bruce and Heather Stanton hosted their ninth beef supper fundraiser for the literacy council at the Moose Lodge on Kitchener Street.

“We wanted to create an event each year for an organization and a cause that sometimes flies a little under the radar,” said Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton.

The local non-profit agency was a good fit, he said.

“Literacy means a lot to the learners and the volunteers,” he said. “It’s a transformation. They can start reading to their kids. It might encourage them to go back to school. It really lifts people up.”

The event has raised about $5,000 each year for the organization through ticket sales and silent-auction revenue.

“When you’re a very small charity, $5,000 is a big deal,” said Cathy Graham, program manager with the literacy council.

Over the years, “literacy” has taken on a broader meaning for the council.

“We do many other things. There are very few people who come to us who can’t read at all,” she said. “They might not be able to read well. They might want to learn to do math or learn computer skills.”

Those are just a few of the services the council provides thanks to community support and the dedication of its 30 volunteer one-on-one tutors and the dozens of volunteers who help during fundraising events.
