Hardwood Next Wave Cycling Team makes waves at Ontario Summer Games

Local athletes cycle to 10 gold, six silver and six bronze medals at provincial competition in London

Athletes from the Hardwood Next Wave Cycling Team had a hugely successful Ontario Summer Games, earning a total of 10 gold, six silver and six bronze medals between the mountain bike and road cycling events.

The team had a total of 13 athletes attend the games in London; six of the versatile cyclists did both mountain and road cycling events.

Hardwood Next Wave Cycling participants included Will Smith, Matthew Leliveld, Colton Bartholomew, Ian Ackert, Theron Inglis, Troy Von Svoboda, Brett Lancaster, Nick Sammon, Sierra MacDonald, Kelly Lawson, Ava Holmgren, Isabella Holmgren and Erin Doble.

There were many highlights:

  • Three athletes from Orillia and one from Horseshoe won gold in the team relay and Minesing's Colton Bartholomew cycled to gold in the U16 men’s road race and struck silver in men’s team time trial;
  • Will Smith of Horsehoe Valley earned four golds and two silvers; and
  • Orillia athlete Ava Holmgren won five gold medals and one bronze, winning every mountain bike event she entered as a U16 female but also beating all of the U18 females as well.

“We had an amazing time at the games which were well organized and a lot of fun,” said coach Lisa Holmgren. “Shout out to the Ontario Cycling Association, the Ontario Summer Games’ organizing committee and all of the volunteers that helped run these games. It was an amazing experience for all of the young athletes.”

Another Orillia athlete Colton Woolhouse, who races for A.J.'s Evolution, powered by Norco, also raced to a gold medal.
